Veteran Australia striker John Aloisi finally broke his goal drought as Sydney FC climbed to the top of the A-League ladder with a historic 2-0 win over Melbourne Victory at Telstra Dome.

It was Sydney's first ever league victory in Melbourne.

Aloisi scored the visitors' second goal - and his first for the club - in the 63rd minute, having had only a handful of touches after coming on as a substitute seven minutes earlier.

It gave Sydney a well-deserved win after teammate Mark Bridge had capitalised on his side's early dominance by scoring the opener in the 20th minute.

Aloisi's goal ended a miserable run for Sydney's marquee player, who is on more than $1million per season, but had failed to score in his previous six games for the club, after working his way back from injury.

The 32-year-old scored seven goals in 15 games for Central Coast Mariners last season, his first summer in the A-League.

Two goals in the final ten minutes of play gave Adelaide United a hard-fought 2-1 home victory over Perth Glory in their A-League Round 9 clash at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday.

The Asian Champions League finalists won with goals from Brazilian Alemao and captain Travis Dodd, less than 36 hours after arriving back from Tashkent.

After a scoreless first half, Perth striker Nikita Rukavytsya put Perth ahead with an opportunist strike in the 55th minute.

But Adelaide hit back for a stunning victory with goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes.

Dodd clinched Adelaide's fifth win of the season with a penalty after coming on as a substitute in the second half.

The hosts were a touch fortunate to be awarded the spot kick as Jamie Coyne's foul on Lucas Pantelis appeared to be just outside the box.

Queensland Roar have kept themselves in touch with the A-League's top four with a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix in their A-League Round 9 fixture on Sunday afternoon at Westpac Stadium.

Big defender Josh McCloughan rose high in the 40th minute and headed Matthew McKay's cross into the corner of the net after the Roar caught the Phoenix off-guard with a quickly-taken corner.

The win moved Queensland from sixth to fifth and to 12 points, one behind the fourth-placed Central Coast Mariners.

The Roar's victory was their third from the past four games, a streak marred only by last weekend's 1-0 defeat to Adelaide United.

It also ensured Queensland remained unbeaten in five games against the Phoenix, who remain seventh on the ladder on nine points after their first loss in the last four outings.

Central Coast bounced back to form and claimed local honours with a 1-0 A-League win over Newcastle in a low-key F3 derby in Gosford.

A fine first-half goal to Mariners striker Dylan Macallister in his first A-League start, proved the difference in a match which lacked the usual intensity shown by the close NSW rivals.
