Sydney FC has hinted at a European-based shopping list as its hunt intensifies for an experienced midfielder or attacker. Hakan Sukur, Phillip Cocu and Jay-Jay Okocha are on the short-list.
It is believed Sydney FC have offered the 36-year-old Cocu a $1 million, one-year contract to counter rival bids from the US and Qatar.
Perry said there were "three or four" other players also being considered as fallback options, but Cocu was "top priority".
Other names being bandied around included exciting Nigerian midfielder Jay Jay Okocha, Turkish striker Hakan Sukur and Socceroo John Aloisi.
A month ago, speculation was rife England stalwarts Robbie Fowler and Teddy Sheringham would make the move to the harbour city.
"I keep hearing different names all the time, it's good," Sydney FC coach Branko Culina said ahead of Wednesday night's Asian Champions League group match against Shanghai Shenhua.
"It just goes to show how respected Sydney FC is out there, that all these quality names want to join the club.
Culina and Perry agreed Sydney's presence in Asia had boosted the club's image on the world stage, and admitted a marquee player would do much the same.
"When Dwight Yorke came out here to Australia it wasn't only Sydney Football Club that benefited from that experience, but also Australian football.
"If you were a follower of the world game you would have noticed that all over the world there was a mention of Dwight Yorke being involved in Sydney Football Club.
"That is only good for the game in this country.
"We would love a marquee player."
Cocu played 205 games for Barcelona between 1998 and 2004, and 188 times for PSV Eindhoven over two stints - 1995-1998 and 2004-2007.
He also played in 101 matches for the Dutch before retiring as an international player after they bowed out 1-0 to Portugal in the round of 16 during last year's World Cup in Germany.
