The Newcastle Jets have recovered from an early Queensland Roar goal to salvage a 1-1 draw at EnergyAustralia Stadium while Melbourne, Central Coast and Adelaide all won.
Roar striker Robbie Kruse stunned the 12,326-strong crowd when he put the visitors in front after just 30 seconds. But the Jets crawled their way back and scored in the first minute of the second half through a penalty to Joel Griffiths. Jets goalkeeper Ante Covic saved the day for Newcastle when he stopped a penalty from former Socceroos skipper Craig Moore in the second half to ensure a point for the home side. The draw continues the Jets' unbeaten home record this season and, temporarily at least, maintains second spot on the A-League ladder. Sydney FC's terrible home form in the Hyundai A-League has continued, with the sky blues slumping to a 1-0 loss to Adelaide United at the SFS on Saturday night. Lucas Pantelis scored the only goal of the game in the 52nd minute, condemning Sydney to its fourth home loss in six outings. Branko Culina's men have now taken just four points from a possible 18 at headquarters, which was once the scene of guaranteed heartbreak for visiting teams. This latest setback sees Sydney slip further away from the top four and increases the pressure on coach Branko Culina. Melbourne Victory have bounced back to form with goals from Carlos Hernandez and Rodrigo Vargas giving the Hyundai A-League champions a 2-1 win over Perth Glory at Telstra Dome. It was a game of contrasting halves with Melbourne taking a 2-0 lead after just 34 minutes courtesy of a cracking first Hyundai A-League goal by Costa Rican international Hernandez which was followed up by a header from Vargas. Jamie Harnwell completed the entertaining first half with a header to give the Glory hope of a comeback. But Perth is still awaiting its first win of the 2007/08 season after a more circumspect second half saw the chances dry up, and Melbourne successfully preserve its one-goal advantage to claim its third win of the year and move back into the top four at the conclusion of round nine. A defensive blunder in stoppage time gifted the Central Coast Mariners three valuable away points, and a 2-1 win, against the Wellington Phoenix at Westpac Stadium on Sunday. Mariners striker Sasho Petrovski was on hand to pounce on a poor back pass from Jeremy Christie to beat goalkeeper Glen Moss and secure the Hyundai A-League win in dramatic fashion. Christie and fellow defender Steven O'Dor failed to clear the ball from just outside the penalty area in the 91st minute – handing the injury-ravaged Mariners the competition points. Before a crowd of 10,560 and played in ideal conditions, the loss made it a three-game losing streak for the Phoenix, while the Mariners collected its first win in four games to remain on top of the competition standings.
