A-League: Roar sign talented AusItalian Zullo from Brisbane City Print E-mail
Thursday, 12 July 2007
Qld Roar of the A-League - AusItalia.comQueensland Roar have signed exciting youngster Michael Zullo, formerly named as one of the best ten Australian based footballers not to be playing A-League.

Currently playing for Brisbane City winger Zullo was named as the 20th player on their roster, joining fellow AusItalians Massimo Murdocca, Danny Tiatto and Frank Farina at the Roar.

"For his size he's aggressive, never pulls out of tackles and works very hard on the pitch," Roar coach Frank Farina said.

"I told him yesterday that this was only the beginning for him and he realises that."

Zullo is the fifth player on the Roar roster aged under 20.

"I've always maintained that if we have a good core of experienced players and surround them with good, enthusiastic youngsters, we will have the ingredients for success," Farina said.

In other news Sydney FC have announced they have signed former Socceroo and World Cup star Tony Popovic to a two-year deal.

Popovic started for the Socceroos in their second Group F clash against Brazil in Munich in 2006, whilst his last appearance for the national team yielded a goal last October against Parguay which was his 58th and final cap.

"Tony is a terrific addition to Sydney FC's squad. He's a man of great quality, both in terms of his playing ability and his leadership skills. He's very highly regarded in football circles, as demonstrated by the fact he's captained many of the teams for which he's played," said Sydney coach Branko Culina.

Former Socceroos defender Hayden Foxe has signed a two-year deal with A-League club Perth Glory but remains optimistic he has at least five years left in his 30-year-old legs.

Foxe has played for English Premier League sides West Ham and Portsmouth and was most recently released from Leeds after the club was relegated to English League One and went into administration.

He said the limited amount of fixtures in the A-League compared with European competition meant he had a long future in the game Down Under despite an ongoing foot injury.

"I'm now 30 and I've never played in the Australian league before," said Foxe, who played 11 times for the Socceroos between 1998 and 2003. AAP
