Queensland Roar has signed Brisbane Premier League teenager Mitch Nichols who will play for the club for the next two years.
The attacking midfielder has scored nine times in just eight outings this season for BPL leaders the Palm Beach Sharks but Nichols, 18, said that he is still surprised at the outcome.
"There had been a few rumours around lately and a few bit and pieces in the papers about Queensland Roar being interested, but I didn't think I would be signing a contract today," Nichols said.
"I'm really excited and I want to push hard to be included in the squad."
"I've had a good season so far in the local competition and now I want to prove to myself that I can make the step up into the Hyundai A-League," he added.
Roar coach Frank Farina said the youngster's attacking instincts will be a valuable addition to the squad.
"His goal tally from midfield is impressive and although he hasn't played at this level yet, to get goals you still have to put yourself in good positions and finish off the chances when they come along," Farina said.
"He has to apply himself now and adjust to life as a professional player, but he has enough raw talent to make an impression," he added.
Farina also said that Nichols' signing should be an example for young players with hopes of playing at the highest level.
"Mitch has played for Palm Beach all his life and they should be proud that they have produced a player of his quality," he said.
"He hasn't come through the 'system' as such and that sends a message to all young players that you can still make it even if you haven't played at the institutes." Sportal |
