Round 16 of the Hyundai A-League season resulted in three upsets as Perth Glory won away in Sydney, Wellington Pheonix stunned Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle United put a dent in Melbourne Victory's table topping hopes.

Sydney FC's season hit a new low as Perth Glory boosted their A-League finals hopes with a stunning 4-1 win at the Sydney Football Stadium on Sunday.

Goals to Adriano Pellegrino, Wayne Srhoj and own goals by Sydney defenders Antony Golec and Robbie Middleby helped Perth secure a vital victory which moved them to within one win of the top four.

Sydney, whose only goal came from Stuart Musialik, were again booed by their own fans both at half-time and full-time and now need a significant form reversal over the last five rounds to reach the finals.

Summing up their performance was a dreadful showing by marquee striker John Aloisi, who produced arguably the worst miss seen in the A-League before being booed off when substituted in the 55th-minute.

The pre-season title favourites remain in fifth but the Glory, who are now unbeaten in four games, are now just one point behind them.

Newcastle's defender-turned-attacker Matt Thompson has scored a hat-trick as the last-placed Jets stunned Melbourne Victory 4-2 to keep their faint A-League finals hopes alive on Friday night.

In clearly their best performance of the season, the reigning champions ran riot against second-placed Victory to break a seven-game winless streak and post their first victory since October 18.

Korean import Jin-Hyung Song also chimed in with his first goal for the Jets, while Danny Allsopp and Ney Fabiano pulled two back for Melbourne in the second half.

But Matt Thompson, who has spent much of his A-League career at left-back, was the star of the show, scoring in the 16th, 45th and 49th minutes.

The Jets still face a monumental task to reach the finals but the win put them seven points outside the top four with five games still to play.

Shane Smeltz has played the role of A-League match-winner once again as Wellington Phoenix clung on to beat Central Coast Mariners 1-0 on Friday evening.

Smeltz powered home the only goal after just one minute and 26 seconds, before his side spent most of the rest of the night holding out the pugnacious visitors.

A sixth victory for the season lifts the Phoenix to fifth place and only behind the fourth-placed Mariners on goal difference. AAP
