A-League: Patrick and Petrovski seal the points Print E-mail
Monday, 24 September 2007

Central Coast's Petrovski vs Perth's AusItalian player Simon ColosimoSasho Petrovski's late strike lifted Central Coast Mariners four points clear at the top of the A-League with a 1-0 win over Perth Glory.

The result at Bluetongue Stadium drops the Glory to dead last with three scoreless draws and two losses, and just the one goal this season.

The scoreline also stretched the Mariners' clean sheet run to five in a row in 2006/07, equalling Preston's 21-year-old national league record.

In the 80th minute Petrovski played a neat one-two with substitute Andre Gumprecht on the right, and the 32-year-old striker flicked a neat, close-range finish into the back of the net.

A goal from Brazilian substitute Patrick with his first touch of the ball has earned Sydney FC a much-needed 1-0 victory over Queensland Roar.

The glamour club's first win of the season came against the odds, with skipper Tony Popovic and South American import Juninho out with injury, and the pressure mounting on coach Branko Culina after his team found itself on the bottom of the ladder for the first time in A-League history.

The 22-year-old Patrick had only been on the field for a matter of seconds when he took advantage of some classy lead-up work from midfielder Ruben Zadkovich and veteran Steve Corica to put his team in front in the 69th minute.

The Roar came closest to levelling the score in the 83rd minute when substitute defender Sasa Ognenovski, who himself had only been on the field for a matter of minutes, was denied by a tremendous save from Sydney goalkeeper Clint Bolton, who had to dive low to his left to paddle the ball wide of the woodwork.

The Wellington Phoenix have scrambled a 2-2 draw in the dying minutes of their A-League soccer match against Adelaide United at Westpac Stadium.

Adelaide dominated the game with more corners and shots at goal, but Phoenix scored first, with a commanding performance by Brazilian Felipe, who found the back of the net in the 64th minute.

Felipe, one of the smallest players on the field, excelled to reach above two defenders to head home a long cross.

Diego then levelled the scores for Adelaide in the 69th minute.

Adelaide looked to have sewn up the match when Olyroos striker Bruce Djite scored with only 13 minutes remaining, showing commendable strength to hold a defender at bay before whistling the ball past Phoenix goalkeeper Glen Moss.

But the Phoenix, who last week posted their first win, over Sydney FC, refused to concede and were rewarded for their endeavour when striker Shane Smeltz headed an equaliser in the 87th minute.

A late equaliser from substitute Adrian Caceres helped Melbourne steal a 2-2 draw with Newcastle in their A-League clash at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

The Jets appeared to be cruising to a comfortable win after goals to Adam Griffiths and Stuart Musialik sent them into halftime with a 2-0 lead but second-half goals to Socceroos striker Archie Thompson and Caceres gave the Victory their fifth straight draw to start the season.

Newcastle's star Brazilian recruit Mario Jardel came on with ten minutes to go, earning the cheers of more than 11,000 fans, but they were soon silenced when Caceres danced his way into the Jets' box to slot a low shot past Ante Covic. AAP
