Monday, 10 September 2007
Wellington Pheonix vs Newcastle United Jets - AusItalia.comWellington Phoenix dominated but lost at home against Newcastle at Westpac Stadium as Sydney squeezed a point out of Perth.

In the end it was a 77th minute long-range free kick from Newcastle's Matt Thompson that took a deflection and bamboozled Phoenix goalkeeper Glenn Moss to sneak inside his left hand goal post that sealed the 1-0 win.

The goal came somewhat against the run of play but not before there was a noticeable shift in the Jets gaining a degree of ascendancy in midfield.

In the end the Phoenix will rue the match being one of missed opportunities, the match an exciting, open affair played before a crowd of 11,478.

Phoenix midfielder Michael Ferrante had arguably the most gilt-edged opportunities in each half but, as was the case for much of the match, it was Jets goalkeeper Ante Covic that kept the visitors on level terms before Thompson secured the three competition points.

Perth Glory has fought out its third consecutive scoreless draw of the 2007/08 Hyundai A-League campaign with a 0-0 stalemate against Sydney FC at Members Equity Stadium on Sunday.

The Glory dominated the midfield battle and set up numerous chances throughout the afternoon but struggled to find the finishing touch, with Sydney's steadfast defence coping brilliantly under the pressure.

Sydney striker David Zdrilic also spurned several chances to win it for the visitors, with Perth keeper Tommi Tomich and his opposite number Matthew Nash enjoying quiet days in between the posts.

Both sides entered the match without a host of stars due to injury and international duties.

Sydney was without star Brazilian recruit Juninho (shoulder), striker Alex Brosque, goalkeeper Clint Bolton, defender Ruben Zadkovich and midfielder Mark Milligan, while the Glory were missing skipper Simon Colosimo, midfielder Billy Celeski, Stan Lazaridis, Hayden Foxe, David Tarka and Nikolai Topor-Stanley among others.
