Melbourne Victory powered clear at the top of the A-League after a weekend performance their normally understated coach Ernie Merrick rated close to a season highlight. The Victory now hold a two-point advantage atop the ladder after torching sub-standard Perth Glory 4-0 at Telstra Dome on Saturday night, having lost only one match in seven this season.
While it's arguable witches hats at Victory training probably boast more mobility than the lacklustre Glory did on Saturday night, the Victory impressed with their slick interpassing and a full 90-minute effort despite being without five first-choice players.
Two goals to Danny Allsopp and one each to midfielder Grant Brebner and defender Rodrigo Vargas ensured the Victory's win - pushing them two points clear of Sydney FC who drew 1-1 with Queensland Roar on Saturday night.
Sydney FC midfielder Stuart Musialik stole an amazing 1-1 draw against Queensland Roar with a neat strike deep into stoppage time.
Scottish import Charlie Miller continued the incredible start to his A-League career, scoring his fifth goal in seven appearances in what looked to be a 49th minute winner at the Sydney Football Stadium.
But right at the death Musialik latched on to a long throw in from fellow Socceroos squad member Shannon Cole to snatch an unlikely point for the hosts.
Central Coast Mariners have pegged back a three-goal second-half deficit to force a thrilling 3-3 draw against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.
First-half goals to captain Travis Dodd - after a controversial penalty decision - and defender Robert Cornthwaite and a 50th minute strike from Brazilian Cristiano had Adelaide cruising towards victory.
But Socceroo Mile Jedinak scored a brace, including a 66th minute penalty, and Matt Simon struck an 84th minute equaliser to stun the 9,074 spectators.
The draw spoilt Adelaide's perfect home record to date this season, having previously netted three wins in as many games.
Adelaide next faces Uzbekistan club Bunyodkor at home on Wednesday in the first leg of its AFC Champions League semi-final while the Mariners return to action in a fortnight after the international break.
