A-League: Melbourne and Perth make key signings Print E-mail
Tuesday, 03 April 2007
Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Michael Theoklitos has re-signed with the club for the next two seasons.

In a breakthrough year, Theoklitos kept a Hyundai A-League record of 10 clean sheets from 20 appearances during the club's successful 2006-07 campaign.

Melbourne football operations manager Gary Cole said the club was pleased to retain Theoklitos after his outstanding performance as first choice goalkeeper.

"Michael was outstanding last season and is amongst the best goalkeepers in the Hyundai A-League," Cole said.

"We decided to offer him a new contract following his efforts and we’re very happy to have him at the club for another two years."

The signing comes as a boost for the club after midfielder Kristian Sarkies opted to move to the Victory's grand final opponent Adelaide United during the off-season.

Nikolai Topor-Stanley has signed a two-year deal with A-League outfit Perth Glory.

The Olyroos defender, 22 last month, will stay with Sydney FC for their Asian Champions League campaign but will join 'the Glory for pre-season training once his obligations with Sydney are complete', the club said.

"The club has made some really positive steps in the past couple of months with new owners coming on board and the coaching staff putting together a new-look squad which I'm confident will be able to have an impact in the finals next season," Topor-Stanley said.

"There is a real buzz throughout the league about Perth Glory and I can't wait to be part of it."

Perth Glory assistant coach David Mitchell says Topor-Stanley will be a useful addition to Glory's squad as it looks to make the finals after missing out in the first two seasons of the A-League.

"Nikolai is a confident and skilful defender who will give us added flexibility on the left which was an area where we lacked depth last season," Mitchell said.

"He is a terrific athlete who is creative in his movement from the back, he also likes to get forward and is a big threat in front of goal from set pieces."
