Adelaide United has recorded its second win of the season, and maintained its place in the top four, with a 4-1 win over Melbourne Victory at Hindmarsh Stadium on Friday.
The Victory conceded an own goal at the 14th minute and only minutes later were in trouble when Reds' skipper Travis Dodd scored from close range. A solo effort from Archie Thompson during injury time of the first half gave Victory a glimmer of hope and their form after the break suggested the contest would have a tight finish. But United were the better side overall and all but secured the three points when a Dodd header found its way to the back of the net at the 63rd minute. Lucas Pantelis added some gloss to the performance with a sensational strike from outside the box beating the goalkeeper during the dying minutes of the clash.

Perth looked home and hosed after taking a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute following second-half goals to Jamie Harnwell, James Robinson and Mitchell Prentice, but a 72nd minute strike to Patrick and a goal with the final kick of the match to Brosque earned Sydney the valuable point. The draw moves Sydney into the top four for the time being, although Queensland or Wellington could move above them with a win in their respective matches. Perth, meanwhile, sits dead last on the table with just five points to its name and the season fading fast. The Newcastle Jets reclaimed second spot on the Hyundai A-League ladder with an impressive 2-1 win over an under-strength Phoenix side at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Sunday. Australian Institute of Sport midfielder James Holland scored on debut for the Jets, having signed a short-term contract during the week, before Joel Griffiths grabbed a second goal late in the first half. Wellington notched a consolation goal to Steven Old in the dying seconds of the match. Central Coast Mariners' lead in the Hyundai A-League has been cut to just one point after suffering a 1-0 loss to Queensland Roar at Bluetongue Stadium on Sunday. After being runaway leaders in the early rounds of the competition the Mariners are just one point ahead of Newcastle after nine rounds. Melbourne, Adelaide and Queensland sit in a group of three two points further back. In front of 8,113 fans the Mariners had a horror start to the match conceding an early goal, losing two players to injury in the first 20 minutes and then right back Brad Porter was sent off in the 31st minute. Queensland stunned Central Coast with a goal in just the fifth minute to defender Joshua McCloughan who scored from a Matthew McKay corner. The corner kick cleared rookie goalkeeper Matthew Trott and landed in space near the far post. Dean Heffernan's attempted clearing kick went straight to McCloughan who put the ball past Trott into the left side of the net. Sportal |
