A-League: AusItalian La Paglia's big Sydney FC plans Print E-mail
Wednesday, 06 June 2007
Anthony La Paglia - Sydney FC owner - A-League Football on AusItalia.comAn Aus-Italian combination of Hollywood heavyweights Russell Crowe and Anthony LaPaglia are in talks about developing a purpose-built football stadium in Sydney.

The stadium would house both Crowe's South Sydney NRL team and LaPaglia's A-League football club Sydney FC.

LaPaglia, who is a director and shareholder at Sydney FC, on Saturday revealed to AAP he had been discussing developing a 25,000-seat venue with Crowe for the past four months.

"He wants a stadium, I want a stadium and we think together there is a possibility we might be able to pull it off," said the star of television series Without A Trace.

"I would say if we could get the right people in the room at the same time, it is something that could happen in two to three years."

AusItalian comedian Joe Avati - Double CD - $29Aud - AusItalia Music"We're still trying to work out how to do it exactly, but there's a bunch of emails flying backwards and forth."

"(Crowe) has done a great job in turning (the Rabbitohs) around."

"I want to be associated with people who are driven and passionate about the game."

"He is as driven and as passionate about the Rabbitohs as I am about Sydney FC. And we both appreciate each other at that level."

Sydney FC currently play home games at Aussie Stadium but have no established training grounds or facilities in Sydney, primarily using a back field at Parramatta Stadium.

South Sydney are in the second year of a four-year agreement to play home matches at Telstra Stadium.

The Rabbitohs also play two games in Gosford this season, while the club's former home at Redfern Oval is being redeveloped as a training facility, with construction on the $19 million project expected to be completed next year.

LaPaglia, who was in Sydney on Saturday to help announce American Express as an official sponsor of Sydney FC, said he had not yet officially raised the stadium talks with the club.

"It's not something I've really discussed with the club yet, so it will come as a bit of a surprise to them as well," he said.

Regardless of how far his discussions with Crowe proceed, LaPaglia said it was vital Sydney FC developed their own home base within the next five to 10 years.

"In order to establish a true culture of football, a kind of feeling that this club belongs to the city, we need that home," LaPaglia said.

"It does breed a different kind of mentality and culture, when you walk into your house and you're not renting."

"Right now Sydney is more or less a gypsy team, we don't have a specific training facility... Aussie Stadium is a place that we rent amongst others."

"I want there to be a football-specific stadium for Sydney, and that's going to require a lot of support, a lot of work, a lot of sponsorship and a lot of money, but I think it's important that we have it."

"I think it should be about a 25,000-seater, intimate, close."

Sydney FC narrowly missed advancing to the Asian Champions League quarter-finals last month, but LaPaglia believes an Australian club - despite the massive gulf in expenditure between A-League teams and the heavyweights of Asia - could win the competition in three to five years.
