Adelaide United has gone to the top of the A-League ladder with an emphatic 4-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday.
The teams played a competitive first half - both Wellington and Adelaide scoring a goal in the first five minutes of the contest - but an opportunist score from Nathan Burns just before the break gave the Reds momentum. It was all United in the second half with goals to Lucas Pantelis - his third in as many weeks - and Jason Spagnuolo setting up the convincing result. The Reds join Central Coast and Newcastle on 17 points but have the superior goal difference. Adelaide coach AusItalian Aurelio Vidmar said his players put in a 'solid performance' after conceding the first goal of the game.
"Probably the turning point could've been Burnsy's goal before half time," he said. "Difficult conditions obviously in the first half, so against the wind we played quite well. "The structure was really good; the run from midfield was fantastic today and this guy next to me (Lucas Pantelis) was outstanding today. "We knew with our midfield the quick passing of the ball and the quick movement of players would really cause them some problems." Sydney FC has started life under John Kosmina in stunning fashion, scoring three first half goals to claim a 3-2 win over Central Coast in an enthralling Hyundai A-League clash at the SFS on Sunday. In a game that had everything, including a penalty miss, Sydney striker Alex Brosque grabbed a brace while skipper Tony Popovic added a third. John Hutchinson replied for the Mariners with two goals straight from the top draw. A stoppage time equaliser from Jamie Coyne has given Perth Glory a deserved share of the spoils in a pulsating 3-3 draw against Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium. Coyne had struggled to train all week but popped up deep into the five added minutes of injury time to thrash home from long range and silence the 16,715-strong Brisbane crowd. Second-half Roar substitute Simon Lynch thought he had sealed the points when he scored twice after the Glory earlier threw away a two-goal lead following a dominant first-half display. Lynch scored from spot within four minutes of his introduction to level the scores before controlling a cross from Mitch Nichols, who had replaced Danny Tiatto after he limped from the field with a groin injury, and rifling home a second. In the first-half, Marcinho's maiden league goal had drawn Queensland back into the contest after the bottom side had controlled the opening 45 minutes and scored through a Craig Moore own goal and Jamie Harnwell's third in three games. Gary Van Egmond has continued his unbeaten record against Hyundai A-League champion Melbourne, guiding his Jets to a 2-0 win over a ten-man Victory outfit in a cracking match at Telstra Dome. Newcastle scored the early goal thanks to Adam Griffiths' eighth-minute header and then absorbed 81 minutes of pressure, before twin brother Joel sealed it in the 88th minute. They now move to outright second on the table, while Van Egmond has now led the Jets into battle four times against Melbourne for three wins and a draw. Melbourne's second loss of the season will be especially bitter considering the home side dominated the match, and in particular the second half. Steve Pantelidis' red card proved a decisive moment as the home side went the final 24 minutes a man down, and were unable to get back into the match.
