Big-serving AusItalian Chris Guccione has secured a wildcard into the main draw of the ATP's Adelaide International, tournament organisers have announced.
The world No.91 is currently three places outside direct entry but can now focus on his preparations having been assured a main draw berth. The play-off, for the eight-man field, will run from December 27-28 on the new Plexicushion surface at Memorial Drive. Guccione, Italo-Australian, began a breakthrough 2007 season by reaching his first ATP tour final in Adelaide where he fell in a tight three-set match to Serbian star Novak Djokovic 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-4. Guccione went on to reach the second round at Wimbledon, Queens and Sydney, while also qualifying for Masters Series tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami. "It's great to be going back to Adelaide where I had such a successful tournament this year," he said. "Hopefully I can repeat my efforts, which would be great preparation for the Australian Open." Top seed is Frenchman Richard Gasquet, whom Guccione beat in the quarter-finals this year. AAP |
