The Australian men's water polo team booked their ticket to the Beijing Olympics with a thumping 19-2 win over New Zealand to claim an unbeatable 2-nil Oceania series lead.
The Aussie Sharks won Friday night's opening clash 20-2 and delivered an equally impressive victory on Saturday night to earn a guaranteed position in the 12-team competition at next year's Olympics. New Zealand opened the scoring with a David Broome goal but Australia came back by the end of the first quarter to lead 3-1. The Australians were made to work hard throughout the first half before going to a 7-2 lead by halftime with Adam Cunliffe notching the second goal for the Kiwis. Australia, bronze medallists in this year's World League, opened up in the second half slamming home 12 goals to secure the Oceania berth to Beijing. Rob Maitland and captain Trent Franklin led the scoring for Australia with four goals each. The final match will be played at the same venue on Monday night. AAP |
