Racing: Efficient wins 2007 Melbourne Cup PDF Print E-mail

Efficient wins the 2007 Melbourne Cup - AusItalia.comProminent businessman Lloyd Williams landed his third Melbourne Cup when Efficient took out Australia's most famous race at Flemington today.

Efficient, ridden by Michael Rodd and trained by Graeme Rogerson, came with a strong run in the final 100 metres to down the heavily backed Purple Moon.

Irish-trained Mahler was third.

"I've won the Melbourne Cup - I can't believe it," Rodd said.

"All credit goes to Lloyd Williams and Graeme Rogerson and their great stable here in Melbourne."

Williams had previously won the Cup with Just A Dash in 1981 and What A Nuisance in 1985.

Williams had his favourite horse Gallic scratched from the Cup this morning.

Gallic was one of three runners knocked out of the race in the final few hours.

The Fuzz and the well fancied Maybe Better were both found to be injured in the lead-up to post time.

Efficient won the Victoria Derby at the Melbourne Cup carnival last year but was only ninth to El Segundo in the Cox Plate at his last start.

Williams also had Zipping in the race, who ran fourth for the second year in a row.

Williams watched the race from home and did not have a bet on the race.

"Age has caught up with me - I'm just happy to win," he said.
