 In-form Italian Flavia Pennetta overwhelmed Taiwanese teenager Chan Yung-jan 6-1 6-3 to win her third tour title at a rain-drenched Bangkok Open on Sunday.
In a one-sided final interrupted by four hours of rain, the 49th-ranked Italian breezed past the 18-year-old in just over an hour of play to win her first title of the year. "I wasn't expecting this, I have to be honest," said Pennetta, who beat Wimbledon champion Venus Williams to reach the final. "It's a great victory for me. I didn't play good tennis but I did the right thing to bring this match home," she told reporters. "Everyone was expecting me to win."
The rain delay appeared to have done Chan some good after she returned with renewed vigour, breaking Pennetta in the first game with heavy topspin lobs and stinging forehands into the corners of the court. Pennetta served well and produced answers for everything else Chan sent her way, breaking her opponent three times on her way to the title. The Italian said she had feared the suspension of play could give Chan the advantage. "I thought after the delay she would fight back," she said. "In tennis, you never know - anything can happen. "I knew if I didn't play my best tennis, she would beat me. I knew she was a good player." Pennetta's victory capped a successful four-week stint in Asia after her quarter-final finish in Kolkata and back-to-back semi-finals in Seoul and Tokyo. "I'll definitely be back next year," she added with a smile. Chan, who was playing in her first tour final, said Pennetta was too strong for her. "She played well, she didn't make many mistakes, she deserved it today," said Chan. "It's my first final, it's disappointing but I'll get my chance in the future." Dopo aver messo al tappeto prima Shahar Peer e poi Venus Williams, che contro le italiane aveva un parziale di 20 vittorie e una sola sconfitta, Flavia Pennetta ha vinto il torneo di Bangkok (200mila dollari, cemento) la diciottennte di Taipei Yung Jan Chan. Il match, sospeso più volte per la pioggia, non ha avuto storia. La brindisina, alla decima finale nella storia, ha vinto con estrema autorità il primo set per 6-1 e poi ha retto bene al ritorno dell'avversaria chiudendo la seconda frazione per 6-3. "Devo essere onesta - ha dichiarato Flavia Pennetta al termine della sfida - ad inizio torneo non mi sarei mai aspettata tutto questo. Oggi il match si è giocato in condizioni molto difficili e sapevo che sarebbe stato molto complicato se non avessi giocato il mio miglior tennis. Lascio Bangkok con tanti bei ricordi e con la gioia di aver superato molte grandi avversarie". Pare dunque passato il lungo momento nero che aveva attanagliato la brindisina dall'operazione al polso che aveva subito sul finire del 2006. Da numero 16 del mondo, Flavia è inesorabilmente scesa fino a lambire l'uscita dalle top 100 (è stata al anche numero 92). Poi la rinascita culminata con questa vittoria dopo aver perduto nel corso dell'anno 13 volte al primo turno. Questa di Bangkok è stata la 35ª vittoria italiana nella storia del circuito Wta, la quarta personale per Flavia Pennetta che nel passato aveva trionfato a Sopot nel 2004 (sulla Koukalova), a Bogotà nel 2005 (su Dominguez Lino) e ad Acapulco sempre nel 2005 (sulla Cervanova). Per l'Italia, che da lunedì avrà quattro giocatrici tra le prime 40 del mondo (le altre sono Francesca Schiavone, Tathiana Garbin e Mara Santangelo), si tratta della terza vittoria stagionale dopo i successi di Roberta Vinci a Bogotà e di Francesca Schiavone a Bad Gastein. E' questa la seconda volta nella storia che tre italiane riescono ad aggiudicarsi tre tornei; in precedenza era accaduto soltanto nel 1990 quando Raffaella Reggi vinse a Taranto, Sandra Cecchini a Bastad e Federica Bonsignori all'Estoril.
