Football: AusItaliana De Vanna makes World Cup all-star team PDF Print E-mail

Matilda striker Lisa De Vanna is selected in the Women's World Cup All-Star squad - AusItalia.comMatildas striker Lisa De Vanna has been rewarded for her part in Australia's breakthrough women's World Cup showing, named in FIFA's all-star team.

The 22-year-old is one of 16 players named by the sport's governing body based on performances throughout the tournament.

Australia had failed to win a single World Cup game prior to this year's event in China.

But the Matildas made it all the way to the quarter-finals, where they lost 3-2 to eventual losing finalists Brazil.

Perth-based De Vanna scored four goals in the Matildas' historic run, despite being used as a substitute in three of the team's four matches.

She joins an elite list of four forwards, also comprising Brazilian duo Marta and Cristiane, plus German World Cup-winning captain Birgit Prinz.

Australia finished the tournament ranked sixth - behind the four semi-finalists and China.

Meanwhile, the Matildas have been voted into fifth place on website fifa.com as the tournament's "Most Entertaining Team", behind finalists Brazil and Germany, traditional powerhouse the United States and the host nation.

De Vanna and compatriot Heather Garriock are also in contention for the goal of the tournament award.

De Vanna produced a spectacular strike against Norway, while Garriock's neat headed finish against Ghana has also been nominated.
