(SBS) The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has named former AC Milan and Italy midfielder Roberto Donadoni coach of the national team, replacing 2006 World Cup-winning Marcello Lippi - who quit on Wednesday saying he had 'come to the end of my role'.Under Lippi's stewardship, Italy was undefeated in 25-games on its way to defeating France on penalties in the World Cup final in Berlin after putting out hosts Germany in the semi-finals. Donadoni, who played 63 times for his country and won a myriad of trophies with AC Milan, has had limited coaching experience in the Serie A after beginning with Serie C side Lecco in 2001. The following season he guided Livorno to 10th place in Serie B and then he moved to Genoa for a brief spell before rejoining Livorno for the 2004/05 campaign. After a credible ninth place finish in Serie A, Donadoni quit the club mid-way through the 2005/06 season - with Livorno flying high in an unprecedented sixth place - after a row with the club president. "We decided to bet on a youngster who could become truly great," Demetrio Albertini - a former team-mate of Donadoni's at AC Milan and the national team and the current Italian football federation's vice-commissioner - said. Donadoni was selected ahead of Alberto Zaccheroni and Under-21 team boss Claudio Gentile and has a huge job ahead of him to succeed Lippi. The 42-year-old must also deal with the fallout from the trial in to Italy's biggest match-fixing scandal with the verdict expected in the next few days. |
