Italians are one of the largest ethnic groups in Australia. "Italian" was the fourth largest ethnic group in the 2001 Census of Australia — after Australian, English and Irish,— numbering 800,256 or 4% of respondents. The Census recorded 218,730 Italian-born people in Australia, although this excludes persons of Italian ethnicity and culture born elsewhere, such as Egypt (1,970), Argentina (1,490) and Eritrea (50). The Italian language was spoken at home by 353,605 persons in Australia in 2001, making it the second most commonly spoken language in the country after English, and ahead of Cantonese. Some notable Italian Australians are Mark Bresciano, Tina Arena, Santo Santoro, The Veronicas, Robert De Castella, The Daddo family, Ron Barassi and David Campese.
