For those that want to taste authentic granita and brioche then you will have to visit Sicily, Italy's exotic island which lies off the 'toe' of southern Italy. Santo Puglia pasticceria is the place to go.
If the granita is good you will find yourself back for atleast 1 or 2 more (possibly 3) that day. I know I did! In the summer in Sicily, granita and gelato are breakfast foods. Santo Puglia, located in Giarre, about 30 mins from Catania on Sicily's east coast makes the most flavoursome and smooth granite and gelati. The most common ones are coffee, mandorla (almond), mandorla tostata (toasted almond) and lemon. According to the season, availability and the mood of the owner of the bar you can also find peach, strawberry, wild strawberries, pistachios, chocolate, etc. Take note that some are not granite but cremolate (they have pieces of fruit inside). Santo Puglia also serves up freshly baked pizze and other baked treats, and one can simply buy a sicilian cake from the fridge...at will. We just hope you don't return home with the 10 extra kilograms that most of my relatives do after spending a month at a Sicilian beach. Santo Puglia - Piazza Ragusa 4, Giarre (CT)Tel 095 931912

AusItalia.com is not talking about the standard 'slush puppy' granita, but of the true 'gusto' (taste) of all things natural to Sicily, the fruit, sweets and caffe.
