AusItalia's interview with Morris Iemma
AusItalia.com Question - Which A-League team do you support?
“As a proud Sydneysider, Sydney FC of course – I’d love to have Benito Carbone back!”.
AusItalia.com Question. Which Italian soccer team do you support?
“Juventus traditionally, but I also enjoy watching Roma play”.
AusItalia.com Question. Did you know the Italian cricket team will play in Darwin this year in an international tournament? And what are your thoughts on this matter?
“I’ve been told about this, and I hope they put in a good show. They’ll be in the World Cricket League division 3 against the USA, PNG, Uganda and others”.
AusItalia.com Question. What is your favourite Italian food/Australian food?
“I can’t go past my “mama’s pasta”, but I love the variety of foods you can get here in Australia”.
AusItalia.com Question. Do you have a favourite band/singer?
“I love blues and rock music including Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Paul Weller, and the Rolling Stones”.
AusItalia.com Question. What are your favourite things about Australia and Italy?
“Australia is a great place to live and raise a family like I’ve done with the Iemma family – relative peace, safety and opportunity. I’m the Premier of NSW and the proud son of migrants – that says it all!”.
“It was personally very satisfying to visit Italy and see where my parents grew up. It was a tough place, but also a very vibrant community”. AusItalia.com Question. Do you follow any other sports in Italy besides football and formula one?
“I love football (how exciting was the World Cup?), formula one racing, and tennis. The Italian basketball team is making great strides, and they say Andrea Bargnani (Italian basketballer) will be an NBA star of the future”.
AusItalia.com Question. Did Morris Iemma ever play any sports and at what level?
“As a youngster I played soccer, Australian rules football and cricket. I still like to have the odd kick around, but these days I’m competing against my kids”. AusItalia.com Question. Please describe your feelings before and after the Australia-Italy match and the 2006 world cup. Were you a torn man?
“The feeling after the Italy-Australia match was bittersweet. I’m an Australian proud of my Italian heritage. I wanted to see Australia go all the way at the World Cup. I guess if you were ever going to be defeated, you’d want it to be at the hands of the mighty Azzurri. They played wonderful in defence and thoroughly deserved to win The Cup”.
AusItalia.com Question. Does Morris Iemma consider himself an Italian living in Australia, an Australian hands down, or an Aus-Italian?
“As I said, I’m an Australian proud of my Italian heritage. I’ll never forget where my parents came from, and the sacrifices they made to give me a better future. I can never repay them enough”.
AusItalia.com Question. What sport would you like your children involved in?
“My two eldest children are already playing football, and trying their hand at cricket”.
AusItalia.com Question. Do you follow or have a keen interest in AusItalians in sports, such as Mark Bresciano of football or Michael Di Venuto of cricket?
“It’s no great secret I’m a big fan of sport. It’s always great to see Australians of Italian heritage making their mark on the sporting field”.
“It was only recently that Luke Ronchi scored the fastest ever one-day century in professional cricket for Western Australia. He joins names like Michael Di Venuto, Ron Barassi, Mark Bresciano and David Campese who have done our community proud”.
AusItalia.com Question. Roberto Baggio or Francesco Totti?
“Francesco Totti – although our relationship was tested after he drove a dagger through the hearts of supporters of the Socceroos World Cup campaign!”.
AusItalia.com Question. Pizza or a four 'n' twenty pie?
“Both, but not at once”.
AusItalia.com Question. Glass of Lambrusco or a pot of VB? “Short macchiato with a shot of sambuca”.
